Math
We have just started to learn how to add two-digit numbers with regrouping! It's going to be a little slow and confusing at first, but it will click very soon. Feel free to show your students any shortcuts or tricks you know while looking over their homework.
Students will keep their flashcards in their book bags so that they can practice at home as well. Spend some time practicing every night. Your child will also be bringing home a practice activity each night to review the skill we worked on in class that day. Please make sure to look over their work and have them tell you how they got their answers. If they can explain their thinking, then they really get it!

Reading
We have been working on visualizing while reading stories. Being able to visualize a book in your head means you really understand what's happening. The more details, the better! This is a very important skill that students will need as they move into reading chapter books and books with fewer pictures. Up next we will be making inferences while we read. Making inferences involves taking clues from a story to figure out something that the author doesn't tell you. An easy way to practice this at home is to focus on characters - discuss what characteristics they have and what clues in the story tell you this.
We are also working on listening to and discussing books. Please practice this at home every night. When you read to your child stop every few pages and discuss what is happening in the story so far, what might happen next, and how the characters are feeling. The more we read and discuss, the better readers we become.

Writing
We are just beginning to publish our first writing pieces. Students selected their favorite story out of their journals and spent some time editing with their partners. Next we will edit together, rewrite, illustrate, and share! We will post our stories on our website, as well as have them displayed at parent conferences for all to see.

Spelling and Phonics
Each week we will have a new set of spelling patterns to explore and learn. We will practice sorting words into the patterns, looking for the patterns when we are reading, and learning to spell the patterns in our writing. Each night students will bring home an activity to practice the patterns for the week. Please make sure they can read each word and identify the pattern. They should also spend some time practicing how to spell the words. Try something interactive like clapping and chanting as you spell out loud!

Science and Social Studies
We are beginning a unit in Social Studies that will involve using map skills and understanding climates around the world. We learned about Peru in October and won the contest for the best display in first and second grade! We finished up our animal unit by learning about the different classes of animals and how they've adapted to fit their environments.
We have also been working on building a classroom community. We have decided what our rules and expectations should be, as well as rewards and consequences. After reading Have You Filled a Bucket Today? together, we are focused on finding ways to encourage and support one another. It makes everyone feel happier when we work together!
